NICOLE PREECE
THE HISTORY BOOK
2025
This project interrogates how history is shaped by dominant voices, focusing on the Irish Famine as a case study in narrative control. Often misrepresented in Irish history and media as a natural disaster, the famine was a systemic failure rooted in colonial neglect and social engineering. The publication draws parallels with how similar tactics are being repeated in current day, dehumanising Palestinians and Ireland’s homeless to manipulate the narrative to benefit the oppressor. Typography is used to mimic these power dynamics: dominant voices shout in red while testimonies of the marginalised whisper in italics between the text, barely legible. The chaotic, layered layout reflects the experience of receiving news in the digital age. Voices shouting over eachother leading to a fragmented, conflicting, and overwhelming narrative.
